Overview
Sanjiv Parmar, KC is a born and raised Albertan. Admitted to the Alberta Bar in 2011, he has since cultivated a diverse legal career, having gained experience in a range of legal areas through his work with various law firms and Alberta Justice. In 2016, he founded Parmar Law, where he continues to offer legal services across a broad spectrum of practice areas. His experience includes child welfare and child representation, family, domestic violence and protection orders, criminal, immigration and refugee matters, personal injury, human rights, employment, regulatory, civil litigation, including landlord-tenant, construction, professional and banking, wills and estates, appellate matters, mediations, arbitrations, and adjudications. Sanjiv has provided legal assistance to thousands throughout his career.
A former Crown Counsel with Alberta Justice, Sanjiv also gained experience training as children’s counsel, on the roster for the Office of the Child and Youth Advocate. His practise involves a wide array of legal proceedings, including dispute resolution, hearings, special applications, trials, and appeals.
In addition, he is highly trained in various mediation techniques and holds both the Registered Family Mediator (RFM) and Certified Comprehensive Family Mediator (Cert.CFM) designations. He is on the mediation rosters for both the Alberta Family Mediation Society and for Family Mediation Canada. He successfully completed the 200-hour Arbitration and Alternative Dispute Resolution certificate program and holds a Qualified Arbitrator (QArb) designation from the ADR Institute of Canada. He is on mediation and arbitration rosters with both the ADR Institute of Canada and the ADR Institute of Alberta. With extensive experience in mediations, he has successfully mediated hundreds of matters and is a member of several mediation rosters for family, support, and child protection cases. Sanjiv mediates in all areas, for clients in Alberta and British Columbia, and arbitrates in all areas accepting appointments within Canada and internationally. Sanjiv is fluent in Punjabi, proficient in Hindi, and growing in his French proficiency.
Beyond his legal practice, Sanjiv is a committed community volunteer, contributing to numerous legal and community organizations, as well as educational institutions. He is a sought-after speaker on a wide range of topics, including domestic violence, criminal, family, child welfare, and immigration law, mediation, protection orders, court navigation, networking, practice management, stress management, diversity, anti-racism, harassment, and access to justice. He also organizes and leads community legal clinics, further demonstrating his commitment to public service.
Sanjiv has been recognized with several accolades, including a Mentor of the Year Award, a feature in a prominent lawyer spotlight series and nominated for a Most Influential Lawyers Award. In 2021, he was appointed to the Law Society of Albert Board and in 2024, he was honoured with the prestigious King’s Counsel designation. This distinction, awarded by the Lieutenant Governor in Council, is granted to lawyers who have made exceptional contributions to the legal profession and public life in Alberta, reflecting exceptional competence, professional qualities, contributions to the administration of justice, and a dedication to the community and the legal profession.
