Biography
Janet has been practicing as a litigator and independent counsel to local government, boards and tribunals for over 30 years. Her practice is focused on Aboriginal/ Indigenous law, Administrative law and Municipal law. She has particular expertise in relation to drafting laws and bylaws (both in the First Nation’s context and otherwise), legislative interpretation, and land use/ environmental issues. She has appeared before every level of Court, including the Supreme Court of Canada.
Janet has represented a wide range of boards and tribunals giving her extensive experience in relation to the conduct of fair and effective hearing processes and drafting relevant and comprehensive reasons for decision. Janet has represented clients in arbitration matters, including a complex municipal dispute in 2021.
She is fully versed with the Arbitration Act of Alberta (and similar legislation) and the new ADRIC Arbitration Rules. She is well positioned to provide effective arbitration services in civil disputes- particularly those related to her key areas of practice.
