Hi Mark,
Thanks for your 2 cents! I think we are on the same wavelength here. Parties tend to fixate on the past and the injuries they have perceived. In an unskilfully conducted mediation they might stay there, to no good purpose. As one of your coaches, Flo, says, “Don’t get stuck in the story”. I see the two quotations you shared as cultural wisdom to help people consider that maybe they should look ahead. Another such observation is, “The past is for reference, not residence”.
I sometimes say to parties in mediation, ‘The past is the past and cannot be changed, though you can change how you understand it. Your opportunity now is to make choices to create a bit of your future.’
