Hi Mark: On this quote, I would try to put the same concepts in plain language that would be more likely to resonate with participants. I like the quote, “life can only understood by backwards, but it must be lived forwards”. I looked it up and this actually comes from Kierkegaard. I think I might use this quote to help the parties understand that we all come with our own understandings of the past, we can use those understandings to shape a better future.
A second thought would be the famous saying, “those who do not understand the past are doomed to repeat it” This might serve the parties to acknowledge that their past experiences have validity but we are in mediation because we want something better for the future.
