ALBERTA GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS

Dispute Resolution Network (DRN)

The Alberta government has a wide range of mediation and conflict resolution programs available to the public at little or no cost. Programs are available for disputes in a number of areas including: civil court claims, land use, municipal affairs, family situations (divorce, child support, or child protection), environment, agriculture, energy, labour, and landlords and tenants.

A variety of programs and services are available to assist communities, nonprofits and volunteerism in Alberta.

Property Rights Advocate Office

This advocate office listens to Albertans’ concerns about property rights and communicates these concerns to government.

CONDOMINIUM, LANDLORD & TENANT DISPUTES

Landlord and Tenant Disputes

The Residential Tenancy Dispute Resolution Service (RTDRS) is a fast, inexpensive, less-formal way to settle disputes between landlords and tenants.

The RTDRS is a tribunal that gives landlords and tenants a way to settle issues without going to court.

Condominium Owners Forum Society of Alberta

The Mission of the Condominium Owners Forum Society of Alberta (COFSAB) is to provide condo owners and occupants with opportunities for networking, education and advocacy to improve the management and value of their properties, strengthen governance of their corporations, enhance the public perception of condominium living, and foster a greater sense of community and collaboration amongst all stakeholders.

PROMPT PAYMENT CONSTRUCTION ADJUDICATION SERVICES

Operating as ARCANA (Alberta), ADRIA delivers Prompt Payment Construction Adjudication Services as a Nominating Authority formally appointed by the Government of Alberta under the Prompt Payment Construction Lien Act (PPCLA).  Full details and applications can be found at: https://adralberta.com/prompt-payment/

COMMUNITY MEDIATION PROGRAMS

These non-profit organizations provide volunteers to assist in resolving conflicts between neighbours, and within community and non-profit organizations, at no cost to participants.

Volunteers provide dispute resolution services to the Ismaili community in the areas of commercial, and matrimonial and family matters.

RESTORATIVE JUSTICE

Alberta Restorative Justice Association
An association of organizations and individuals who practice Restorative Justice. Supports existing and new RJ initiatives in Alberta.

Fairview Community Restorative Justice
FCRJ is a community run program in Fairview, AB that uses Community Justice Forums as its main practice. The programs purpose is not to determine guilt or innocence, but to address the victim’s harms and needs, while holding the offenders accountable to put right those harms

Mediation and Restorative Justice Centre (MRJC)

Restorative processes and Victim-Offender mediation. Programs include Building Safer Ground and Circles of Support and Accountability.

FAMILY/TEEN

Alberta Family Mediation Society (AFMS) AFMS advocates for the resolution of family conflict through the use of mediation by qualified professionals.

Peer Mediation and Skills Training (PMAST)
Calgary
Anti-bullying and conflict resolution to build positive relationships in homes, schools, and communities.

ADRIA offers nationally-recognized Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) training through our courses and certificate programs in Edmonton and Calgary.Foundation for Administrative Justice (FOAJ)  
Edmonton & Calgary

A nonprofit training organization that helps agencies, boards, and commissions educate their members and staff in conducting administrative justice tribunals.

OTHER RESOURCES 

 The Credit Counselling Society  is a non-profit service helping individuals and families find their best options to deal with their debt and get their finances back on track.

 MyMoneyCoach.ca is geared towards helping you fine tune your money skills and increase your knowledge about your personal finances so you can accomplish your financial goals.  

The Alberta Civil Trial Lawyers Association is a non-profit society dedicated to the objectives of advancing the Science of Jurisprudence, training in all fields and phases of Advocacy, upholding the honour and dignity of the Profession of Law, encouraging brotherhood and sisterhood among the members of the Bar, upholding and improving the Adversary System and Trial by Jury, and promoting the Administration of Justice and the Public Good. All members of the Law Society of Alberta and students enrolled in Law School are invited to join the Association.

 The Association of Translators and Interpreters of Alberta / Association des traducteurs et interprètes de l’Alberta (ATIA) is the only association of certified translators, court interpreters, medical interpreters, community interpreters, and conference interpreters in the province of Alberta.

The AJEFA (Association des juristes d’expression française de l’Alberta – the French-speaking Legal Professionals Association of Alberta) is a non-profit charitable organization that was created in 1990 to promote access to justice in French in Alberta.

The role of the AJEFA is to inform Albertans of their rights and responsibilities by providing and delivering legal information to the general public and to special clients (schools, elders, newcomers, families…). It also aims at improving and facilitating access to justice and legal services in French in Alberta.

The Alberta Legal Information Centre is an initiative of the AJEFA (the French-speaking Legal Professionals’ Association of Alberta). They offer legal information, guidance and support services that are confidential and free to all Albertans, in-person and remotely in both official languages.

BBB Edmonton and BBB Calgary offer Mediation and Arbitration services to both consumers and business owners for the resolution of disputes as they arise.  

 The Alberta Association of Professional Paralegals  was originally formed in 1981 to provide recognition for Legal Assistants who wanted to be accredited for the independent work they performed. The Association consists of both Legal Assistants and Paralegals working under the supervision of a lawyer, judge or justice.

The Centre for Public Legal Education Alberta‘s mission is to enhance the accessibility and quality of justice realized in Canada.  It addresses its mission by creating learning opportunities and building learning communities that facilitate the creation, management, exchange, and integration of knowledge among people within the justice system and between them and the general public.
