Position Title: Executive Director
Location: Remote in Canada
The ADR Institute of Canada (ADRIC) is recognized as Canada’s preeminent self-regulatory professional Dispute Resolution organization.
ADRIC sets the standard for best practices for ADR (alternative dispute resolution) in Canada and provides leadership, value and support to our individual and corporate members and to our clients. We provide education and certification, promote ethical standards and professional competency, and advocate for all forms of ADR for public and private disputes.
Access to Dispute Resolution processes such as mediation and arbitration provides families, workplaces, businesses and communities with efficient and effective ways to resolve their disputes without recourse to the Courts and litigation. The demand for ADR is growing in the justice system, in our personal and professional relationships, and in every sector of our economy.
The Affiliates
More than twenty-four hundred ADR practitioners across the country belong to ADRIC through Regional Affiliates in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and the Atlantic Provinces.
ADRIC and its seven regional Affiliates collaborate to build greater awareness of ADR, provide more accessible resolution options and ensure the availability of certified ADR professionals through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
Position Summary
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director of ADRIC will provide exceptional leadership of ADRIC. Committed to the principles of ADR and its opportunity for society-wide impact, the Executive Director will bring a leadership approach that is strong in communication, collaboration, and relationship-building.
The Executive Director will manage programs and services, financial resources, and staff and volunteer resources consistent with ADRIC’s Vision, Mission and Values. They will hold a key leadership position in the organization, and will play a critical role in implementing ADRIC’s strategic vision, and seeing the organization through its next stage of growth. The Executive Director will develop strong relationships with the Affiliates and build harmony within the Federation.
Key Responsibilities:
Governance/Board Support
- Updates and supports the Board to facilitate its efficient operation as a governance body.
- Identifies key issues for Board deliberations and fosters the development of agendas for Board meetings in consultation with the President.
Policy Management
- Implements and monitors policies determined by the Board, including implementation of the Federation MOU, and develops related procedures as appropriate.
Strategic Planning and Leadership
- Provides leadership support to the ADRIC Board and Executive Committee in the development and updating of the strategic plan.
- Independently develops and identifies internal and external strategic opportunities to advance ADRIC’s services and programing.
Operational Planning and Budget Development
- Develops, follows and adjusts an operational plan for review by the Executive Committee and approval by the Board. The operational plan will include goals, implementation activities, and performance measures that are reflective of and complementary to ADRIC’s strategic priorities.
Risk Analysis
- Monitors, evaluates, and takes or recommends actions in regard to the following:
- threats and opportunities related to organizational and external realities including understanding the forces shaping the views of affiliates, clients, partners, and/or members;
- potential assets and liabilities of a project, proposal, or strategy;
- threats to ADRIC’s organizational image or ability to carry out their mission; and
- risks to the organization’s financial security and growth.
Financial Management
- Implements the Board’s policies for the allocation and distribution of resources.
- Provides the Treasurer/Executive Committee/Board with regular statements of revenues and expenditures.
Program Management
- Facilitates the research, planning, development, implementation and evaluation of ADRIC programs and services that reflect ADRIC’s strategic priorities.
Human Resources Management:
- Develops an organizational structure and human resources strategy to effectively achieve organizational plans and goals.
- Develops and implements personnel policies.
Advocacy Management:
- Promotes community and public awareness of the organization’s mission and aims including its partnership with Affiliates (according to the Federation MOU)
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCES
ADRIC is seeking an Executive Director who is:
- Able to build relationships, negotiate, and communicate effectively across a breadth of diverse stakeholders.
- Comfortable with change, flexible and adaptive.
- A receptive, active listener who can balance perspectives in making decisions and articulating a vision.
- Interested in alternative dispute resolution and a passion for ADR’s mission and values.
The ideal candidate will bring the requisite leadership capability to lead ADRIC in the development, communication and implementation of strategy and plans to achieve the organization’s mission and goals. This includes:
· Excellent relationship building and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to negotiate through conflict to achieve mutually beneficial results.
· An experienced and effective team leader and collaborative manager who can build and embrace a positive culture of constructive conflict.
· Ability to identify and pursue opportunities for membership growth and partnerships.
· A strong problem solver, who is open to and has an eye for innovation.
· A kind, enthusiastic, and honest approach to leadership.
· Verbal fluency in both French and English; comfortable leading discussions and professional meetings in both languages.
