An ADRIA Event in partnership with FOAJ
MONEY & CONFLICT
It should come as no surprise, especially so soon after the holiday season, that money woes can be the cause of marital and family stress. Unemployment or poor spending habits can exacerbate the situation. One can easily conclude that Money & Conflict are synonymous, and that this reality extends well beyond just the family unit. The FOAJ & ADRIA are pleased to present two speakers this month that will offer their experience, insights and potential resources to better understand the money & conflict dynamic. What skills or resources might be available to you when assisting families though these difficult conversations or decisions? Come enjoy this networking opportunity with colleagues and guests.
ADRIA member and Director Dora Dang will first speak about the Circle of Conflict, and how financial pressures can fuel or contribute to a deteriorating family situation. A pronounced drop in Alberta’s economic outlook has resulted in job losses and changing financial circumstances. As Alberta’s pipeline and economic woes are extended, it is inevitable that many families living in Alberta will face the financial consequences of this economic downturn. These financial stresses are often the tipping point that can end a marriage already on the rocks. As an Alternative Dispute Resolution specialist, be it as a mediator or negotiator, when analyzing money and conflict it is important to realize the many sources of conflict and to be able to figure out what kinds of financial conflict are present. If the issues cannot be diagnosed properly, then the resolution may be impossible.
Our second speaker is Mark Kalinowski from the Credit Counselling Society - a non-profit service helping individuals and families find their best options to deal with their debt and get their finances back on track. Mark will present Financial 1St Aid for Mediation Professionals, assisting us all to learn how financial stress impacts our clients, to recognize the signs of financial stress, and to know what strategies and resources might be available to assist them.
